The Heroes of 1916-1919 Monument
Monumentul-Eroilor_84Built in memory of the almost 14,000 Romanian soldiers who were killed on the frontlines in Oituz, Coşna, and Cireşoaia, during World War I (1916-1918), this monument at the top of Mount Magura is indeed impressive.  What distinguishes this monument from the rest in the country is both its architecture and its location at an altitude of 520 meters (1,706 feet).  The construction of this monument started in 1925, under the rule of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria, and ended in 1928, under the rule of King Mihai.

Corporal Constantin Muşat – a legendary hero from World War I 1916-1918

Corporal Constantin Muşat (Made Sergeant Posthumously)  – a legendary hero from World War I 1916-1918

In the tough battles of the August-December 1916 campaign in Predeal, Oltului Valley , and in the Vrancea mountains the border guard soldier Constantin Muşat, from the 2nd Border Guard Regiment, was always leading the troops out of the trenches during attacks. He sustained minor wounds in his first battles, and refused multiple times to be evacuated from the front.  On December 16, 1916 during a grueling battle next to Soveja, he was hit by shrapnel and this scorching sliver of steel sliced into his left arm.  He woke up later in a field hospital bed with his left arm amputated from the shoulder.

A Piece of World War I
A piece from the 1917 victory of Mount Magura in World War I
During the battle of Oituz, which was waged in this area from August 8 through August 22, 1917, a major time of crisis fell over Targu Ocna on the 10th and 11th of August.  During vigorous counterattacks, the 15th and 17th infantry regiments, aided by reinforcement troops (the mountain batallions), were able to remarkably reunite and cover a break in the front on Mounts Magura and Cireşoaia.  The units of mountain battalions had been established in Târgu Neamt in the fall of 1916.
